200 Pages !

Posted: September 16, 2010 in Books, Writing

You know how it is, one minute you think you have lost the will to live, the next you are writing so fast that your brain cant catch up. Well, thats happened to me this week.

I sometimes lose myself in my writing, to a point at which all outside influences disapear and the universe becomes centered around my keyboard. Its just one of those things that sometimes happens to me when I write. Something just clicks and all of a sudden the half baked ideas and thoughts that I have been throwing around my brain suddenly make sense. At least they do at the time. The reality of the situation is somewhat different.

My brain never seems to settle. I sleep two or three hours a night for weeks on end, so writing is just another tool I use to slow my brain down to the point at which it shouts – GO TO SLEEP! Well, when you are this tired, sometimes the best story arc in the world fails to inspire. More often than this occurance, is the one where you get what seems a great story idea, write pages and pages of material and awake the next morning to find that none of it makes any sense.

This week, this happened a few times. However, the greatness of this technique is that it sets the plot lines, the weird occurances and the downright ugly, freaky and grotesque things in the lives of my characters. Which is lucky because if I wasn’t able to ignore reality, I would never get things done.

170 Pages ! Now back to 165 :-(

Posted: July 30, 2010 in Books, Writing

Ok, I know this is like reinventing the wheel, but I did get to 170 pages. I read it and it sucked big time. How is it that I know (roughly) where my book is going but I’m unable to get there. This is the hardest part of writing, being afraid that the ending doesn’t make sense. In fact, so far it does, but I don’t have the bits in between.

So I got to page 170, thought about it, read it again, and deleted the lot.

Now I’m afraid that I’ll never get there, so I’m rereading the whole book to see how badly I am doing.

Vampire now at 165 Pages!!!!

I got lost in a convoluted plot, removed about thirty pages, and re-wrote them. I have discovered that I hate writing in the first person.

VAMPIRE @ 145 Pages !!!!

Posted: June 16, 2010 in Books, Writing

For those 6 of you that actually subscribe to this blog, you’ll be glad to know that Vampire, The Crossing is now at 145 pages. As the plan is to finish on 235 pages, this means that I am officially more than half way through the book. It is becoming easier as I go on, but also more confusing.

I think that I will probably be at 150 pages by tomorrow, but the worst thing is all of the chapters are out of synch.

Vampire now at 100 Pages!

Posted: November 23, 2009 in Books, Writing

Ok, so I know its been a long time coming, like all things in my life at the moment, but I have finally reached page 100 of Vampire, The Crossing.

Don’t applaud me yet though, because I’m pretty sure than this is just a third of the way through.

Oh well, they say all good things take time.

Vampire, reaches 90!

Posted: October 27, 2009 in Books, Writing

Okay, so I know its been ages in coming, but finally I have rewritten Vampire and we are now running at 90 pages.

The problem is, with the plans I am making, this looks like it is now only 25 percent of the novels planned length. New comments are coming in, and they are better than I could have expected. I think the worst comment was my grammar. The best came from a well known Vampire author who said he would like to see more, more, more! Which was nice.

So, no more updates on here for a while, until I get to page 100. Keep reading the column in Micromart, see you soon.

MPs Expenses

What is it about the newspapers? Okay, all props to them for opening up the scandal of MPs expenses but they need to get a grip.
In some cases, innacurate reporting has taken place for the sake of sensationalism, and that is what gives newspapers a bad name.

Why has it been televised news companies that have been left to report the true facts in an unbiased way?

The British press has a bad reputation that needs to be resolved. The only way this can happen is if they build their reputation up through accurate and unbiased reporting. That responsibility is as much the responsibility of the reporters as it is their editors, but the editors are the last barrier.

Get real guys!

Update To Writing

Posted: April 21, 2009 in Magazines, Websites, Writing

Well, today I have taken the time to write my weekly column for Micro Mart magazine. I’ve also finished a couple of reviews for Den of Geek (www.denofgeek.com), so thats fairly productive.

Those that are close to me know that I am also writing a Sci-Fi novella and a few short stories to go with it. Well, today I got to 17900 words, which is the most I have ever written for any single project. There will be six short stories to go with it, which is going to fill in all of the appropriate back ground to the main story. The book will be called the Solar Chronicles, and I hope it will be one in a trilogy – charting a hypothetical expansion of mankind to the stars.
